英語 問題

■T 以下の文を読んで、各問に答えなさい。

A 48-year-old man named Tom Wallace bought a beautiful diamond ring because he was going to ask his girlfriend to marry him. He went to the office the next morning and left the ring at home by mistake. At lunch time, the woman living in the apartment next door to Tom called him up at the office and said to him, "I heard noises from your apartment. Should I call the police for you?"
Tom suddenly remembered the ring, and without answering her he threw down the phone and rushed out of the office. The elevator wasn't working, so he ran all the way downstairs to the street. He tried to find a taxi, but he couldn't, so he ran two miles home.
When he came to his apartment building, he found that the elevator wasn't working there, either. So he ran up to the fourth floor of the building, and then remembered leaving his keys at the office, but there was nothing he could do now. He kicked in the door and rushed into the apartment. He ran into the living room and found that the ring was missing from the desk. He looked everywhere in the apartment for the thief. He was very angry. After that he rushed to the window and looked down. A man was walking out the front door.
That's him, he thought. He ran into the kitchen, pushed the refrigerator into the living room, lifted it up, and dropped it out of the window onto the man down below. Then suddenly poor old Tom had a heart attack.
Some time later, at the gates of heaven, three men were waiting for St. Peter. To pass the time they talked about how each of them died.
The first man said, "Well, I was walking out of an apartment building when some fool dropped a refrigerator on my heard. What could I do?"
The second one said, "Well, I had to run all the way across the town and then had a heart attack from pushing a refrigerator out of the window of my apartment."
Then the two men asked the third man, "How did you die?"
"Well," he said, "there I was sitting in the refrigerator ..."

【い】At the same time, people in the States still like to think of some kinds of food as especially American. They like the idea of the American family sitting around the table eating turkey at Thanksgiving. They like to think of "Mom" as the best cook in the world, even if their own mother never does much cooking. "As American as apple pie," and "Like Mother makes it" are popular expressions.

【う】The truth is, though, that families in the U.S. eat together less often than they did. Instead of meeting at the dinner table, families often meet in the kitchen, around the refrigerator. There's no time for old-fashioned cooking. Quick snacks all through they day have taken its place. And to save trouble, people eat in every place they like, in the street, in front of the TV, or at their desks.

【え】What is American food? Hamburgers and hot dogs? Fried chicken and giant steaks? Well, yes. But spaghetti and pizza are American too, and so is sweet and sour pork.
